This cleanup is a big deal because it’s the 36th year we’re doing it! The event gets organized by The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.  The initiative covers 45 cities with the objective of keeping the entire state free of pollution.

If you can’t take part in the main cleanup day, you can still make it to the event. Starting on Sept. 1, you can join us for a whole month of cleaning up. You can do it in your neighborhood, at parks, or near water – wherever you like! This campaign supports Governor John Carney’s Keep DE Litter Free initiative.

DNREC Secretary Shawn M. Garvin encouraged even more people of all ages to join the cleanup efforts. He also encouraged volunteers to make cleaning up a regular activity not just in September but throughout the whole year. By working together, we can keep Delaware beautiful and free of litter.

Volunteers can sign up and register online for their choice of cleanup sites starting from the opening date, Friday, September 1. The registration process is hassle-free, allowing participants to select the most convenient location for them to make a difference.

 Coordinated Cleanup Sites and Locations

The Coastal Cleanup will encompass 45 sites throughout Delaware. These designated locations offer diverse environments, from sandy shores to lush wetlands, ensuring that every volunteer can find an area close to their heart to protect.

 Month-Long Campaign for Cleanup

Beyond the one-day cleanup event, Delawareans and visitors are invited to take part in a month-long campaign, commencing on September 1. Throughout September, individuals and groups are encouraged to clean up their neighborhoods, green spaces, and waterways at their chosen times and locations, amplifying the impact of the Coastal Cleanup.

Increased Participation and Impact of the Cleanup

Over the years, the Coastal Cleanup has experienced a surge in participation, signifying the growing awareness and concern for the preservation of Delaware’s environment. Last year alone, 1,180 volunteers collaborated to remove an astounding 6,248 pounds of trash from waterways, wetlands, and other natural areas.

How can one be a part of DNREC Volunteer opportunities?

 Role of Site Captains and Volunteer Supplies

To ensure a smooth and efficient cleanup process, site captains will be present at each location to facilitate the sign-in process and provide essential supplies such as trash bags and directions. While gloves, paper data cards, and pens will be available upon request, volunteers are encouraged to bring their own gloves, reducing waste and ensuring a more sustainable cleanup effort.
